Program Overview

Math Sharkz! is an innovative math tutoring program designed to integrate mathematics and billiards (pool) to enhance participants’ ability to identify patterns, a critical math skill. The essence of mathematics lies in the study of shapes, spaces, distances, and quantities. By incorporating these fundamental elements into an engaging and interactive environment, Math Sharkz! aims to make math learning enjoyable and effective.

Program Structure

Participants will work one-on-one with a coach over the course of four one-hour sessions. The coach can be a parent/guardian or volunteer. Parents/Guardians are required to stay during each session. No pool playing experience is necessary to qualify as a coach. Each session is tailored to blend theoretical math concepts with practical billiards applications, fostering a deeper understanding of mathematical patterns and problem-solving techniques. This unique approach ensures that participants can see the real-world applications of math, making the learning process more relatable and impactful.

Competition Component

To test their mastery and application of the concepts learned, participants will compete in the Math SHARKZ! competition. This competition is designed to challenge participants and reward their efforts through a structured and stimulating format. The competition consists of 8 rounds, where participants will face written word problems that dictate the placement and pocketing of billiard balls.

Competition Details

  • Written Word Problems: Each participant receives a set of written word problems at the beginning of each round. These problems describe specific scenarios involving the placement of the billiard balls and the pockets in which they should be aimed.
  • Solving the Problems: Participants solve these problems by attempting up to 15 shots based on identified patterns. This process encourages them to apply their mathematical knowledge in a practical setting.
  • Scoring System: Participants earn 1 point for each successful shot. Scores are tallied at the end of each round to determine the participants’ performance.
  • Ranking and Trophies: Based on the total scores from each round, participants are ranked. The top performers will be awarded first, second, and third-place trophies, recognizing their mathematical and practical billiards skills.

Goals and Objectives

The primary goal of Math Sharkz! is to enhance participants’ mathematical skills through an engaging and practical application of math principles. By the end of the program, participants will have:

  1. Improved their ability to recognize and utilize mathematical patterns.
  2. Gained a practical understanding of shapes, spaces, distances, and quantities through billiards.
  3. Developed problem-solving skills that are transferable to both academic and real-world scenarios.

Timeframes: 1:00 p.m. to 2 p.m. or 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
