Yanceyville, NC — Bartlett Yancey High School is taking an innovative leap towards increasing the number of students earning their Remote Pilot Certification, thanks to a unique partnership between Drone Tech I and II instructor Brian Totten and STEMERALD City LLC. The collaboration aims to make complex aviation concepts more accessible by using indoor drones to help students visualize key elements of the National Airspace.
In a recent lesson, students learned how to distinguish between Mean Sea Level (MSL) and Above Ground Level (AGL) — two essential measurements for safe drone operations. By programming the drones to fly to specific waypoints at various altitudes based on the school’s elevation, students gained hands-on experience that reinforced their understanding of airspace terminology. Totten stated, “I particularly enjoy STEMERALD City’s approach to integrating this into my classroom. Through embedded professional development, I become a learner with my students. I now feel more confident in facilitating these activities next semester. This is win win for the district, me, and especially my students.”
“I didn’t quite understand MSL and AGL,” remarked one student after the session, “But now I do.”
The hands-on approach is expected to have a lasting impact on students’ grasp of aviation safety. With certification exams scheduled for the end of the semester, the goal is clear: a 100% passing rate. Totten, along with STEMERALD City LLC, is confident this practical approach will not only boost understanding but also lead to success in the exam room.
The program represents a forward-thinking approach to career readiness, ensuring students are equipped with both the knowledge and the practical skills needed to thrive in the growing field of drone technology.
